- - - PART 2 - - -
1. WHAT HAVE
YOU DONE (JOB/MUSIC) BEFORE BECOMING A "FEELGOOD"?
Worked for Civil Service (Computers and Civil Engineering) after leaving
school. First band "Hands Off" formed at school. Joined rock
band "Chevy" in 1978 and turned professional. Joined R'n'B band
"The DT's" in 1982, played with the late Steve Marriott (ex Small
Faces, Humble Pie) from 1987 until joining Dr Feelgood in 1989.
2. WHEN DID YOU JOIN DR FEELGOOD?
Joined Dr Feelgood late Spring 1989. One of my first gigs was at London Town and Country Club - was recorded and became the album "Live in London". The gig was also filmed for TV.
3a. WHY DID
YOU JOIN DR FEELGOOD AND NOT ANOTHER BAND?
I was asked if I was interested in joining Dr Feelgood. I had liked
the band since their first album, and had become friends through playing
with them on the same bill (with the DT's/Steve Marriott). How could I
refuse?!?!
3b. IF YOU
COULD TURN TIME BACKWARDS WOULD YOU DO THE SAME?
Yes.
4. ANY SPECIAL
EXPERIENCE OR MEMORIES FROM THOSE DAYS WHICH YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH
US?
Refering back to the gig at London's Town and Country Club (see question
2). This was my 2nd or maybe 3rd gig with Dr Feelgood, so I was really
still finding my feet with the band. Can you imagine how I felt when I
arrived at the Town and Country Club that night to find out that (a) the
gig was being filmed for TV and (b) it was going to be recorded also? Needless
to say, I was pretty nervous (so was Lee!). I think if you listen to the
record you can hear a lot of positive, nervous energy in the way the band
played that night. By the way, it was a great gig!
5. WHAT DO
YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING PART OF DR FEELGOOD?
Many things. I enjoy the company and cameraderie within the band itself,
and I think we are very lucky to have the chance to visit so many places
and meet so many people on the road; I have made a lot of friends through
playing with the band over the years.
7. WHAT HAVE
YOU DONE WHEN DR FEELGOOD STOPPED AFTER LEE'S DEATH?
When Dr Feelgood stopped during Lee's illness, I played for a short
time with Eddie and The Hot Rods. Then I joined The Roger Chapman Band
for a few months, playing in Austria, Germany and Switzerland before joining
The Big Town Playboys until Dr Feelgood reformed.
(Note by Gabi: The Big Town Playboys played some of Steve's
songs at gigs, including a great version of "Sweet Louise", in
a different style as Dr Feelgood, of course.)
8. IN WHICH
OTHER BAND(S) HAVE YOU PLAYED, OR ARE YOU PLAYING NOW?
Hands Off (from school), Chevy, The DT's, Steve Marriott Band, Eddie
and The Hot Rods, Roger Chapman, Big Town Playboys. Apart from Dr Feelgood,
I play occasional gigs ("The GB's") with Craig Rhind (bass) and
Chas Chaplin (drums) - (from the DT's, now with UK band The Razors). I
have recently played in Spain for two weeks with Craig and Chas, as The
Steve Walwyn Band.
(Note by Gabi: Steve and Craig also played in "The
Rogues". - Craig Rhind was in Dr Feelgood when Dave Bronze had to
fulfill a commitment to Procul Harum in 1992.)
9. ON WHICH
OTHER RECORDS OR TAPES HAVE YOU PLAYED? (excluding Dr Feelgood ones)
Albums: Chevy: "The Taker" - The DT's: "The DT's"
and "Shakin' and Stirred", Live at the JB's, Dudley, England
- Steve Marriott: "30 Seconds to Midnite" - Big Town Playboys:
"Hip Joint".
Many other sessions over the years, too numerous to mention here (can't
remember some of them!).
(Note by Gabi: If I'm not wrong, Steve also recorded
another album with THE DT'S in 1983, "Messing with the Blues".
A kind of promo tape exists from 1994 called "Kelly's Heroes"
with THE GB's, THE ROGUES and The Razors.)
10. WHAT INSPIRED
YOU TO BECOME A MUSICIAN, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY?
I always liked music, but it was not until I was about 17 years old
that I thought about learning to play the guitar. I was inspired by many
artists and records, but my main influence at that time were Rory Gallagher,
Jimi Hendrix, Steve Marriott, Peter Green and other (mainly blues) guitar
players.
11. ARE THERE
ANY OTHER INSTRUMENT(S) YOU ARE REASONABLY ABLE AT PLAYING?
Slide Guitar, Bass, Harmonica, Piano (very badly). I also own a mandolin
which I attempt to extract a tune from occasionaly.
(Note by Gabi: Steve forgets to mention he also is not
bad in singing!)
12a. WHICH
KIND(S) OF MUSIC/BANDS DO YOU ENJOY LISTENING TO? (Favourite bands/musicians,
favourite albums)
I like many styles of music, from classical to country, rock and roll,
cajun, some jazz, and some folk music. But above all I love blues - some
examples - Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Robert Johnson
etc.
Favourite albums - too many to mention.
12b. WHICH
ARE YOUR FAVOURITE DR FEELGOOD TRACKS AND WHY?
Favourite Dr Feelgood tracks - difficult to answer this one! Some of
them are: She Does It Right, I Can Tell, Down At The Doctors, Instinct
To Survive, One Step Forward - I could list many more, and I like them
for different reasons!
13a. WHICH
KIND(S) OF MUSIC DON'T YOU LIKE?
Generally I don't like music which is not played by real musicians!
13b. WHICH
ARE YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE DR FEELGOOD TRACKS, WHY?
I like some Feelgood tracks more than others obviously, but I can't
say that I dislike any of them.
14. WHAT ARE
YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
Future plans? To continue trying to make Dr Feelgood more successfull!
15. WHAT ARE
YOUR WISHES FOR THE FUTURE MUSIC WISE?
To keep live music alive and kicking!!!
16. WHAT ARE
YOUR PERSONAL WISHES?
Personal wishes - to be happy and healthy and to continue writing songs,
and to keep improving as a musician.
17. IF YOU
COULD SETTLE DOWN SOMEWHERE ELSE, WHICH COUNTRY OR TOWN WOULD YOU LIKE
TO LIVE AND WHY?
I am very happy where I am in England (Note by Gabi:
Warwickshire), although perhaps I wouldn't mind living somewhere
with a warmer climate!
18. WHAT IS
YOUR FAVOURITE COUNTRY FOR TOURING/GIGGING AND WHY?
I don't really have any preferences regarding most or least favourite
countries for touring or gigging. In my experience it is possible to have
good and not so good gigs or tours anywhere.
19. WHAT IS
YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE COUNTRY FOR TOURING/GIGGING AND WHY?
See answer to no.18.
20. WHAT MAKES
SOME GIGS MORE ENJOYABLE THAN OTHERS?
Difficult to answer this question! For example, I have had really enjoyable
gigs playing to, say, 100 people; and also less enjoyable gigs playing
to 5000 people. A good gig for me is seeing the audience happy however
many they are.
21. HAVE YOU
EVER BEEN BORED FROM BEING ASKED TO PLAY A SONG AGAIN AND AGAIN? WHICH
SONG(S)?
No.
22. WHAT SPECIAL
QUALITY DOES DR FEELGOOD HAVE WHICH OTHER BANDS LACK?
Not for me to say, but I would like to think that Dr Feelgood always
gives 100 per cent - something that I learned from Lee Brilleaux.
23. WHAT WOULD
Y O U LIKE TO BE MOST REMEMBERED FOR?
Musically as a fair guitar player, not a bad songwriter maybe! Personally
as a good father to my children....
24. LIST YOUR
STAGE EQUIPMENT (INSTRUMENT(S)/AMPS ETC):
Two Fender Bassman amplifiers. Stage Guitars: 1966 Fender Telecaster
(The Plank), Squire Fender Telecaster 1991, ESP Stratocaster for Slide.
I also own various other guitars which I use from time to time.
25. HAVE YOU
ANYTHING TO SAY TO YOUR FANS?
Thank you very much for your interest and support over the years - please
keep coming to see us!
