I was a Psychatric Nurse / Individual counsellor for 20 years
2. WHEN DID
YOU JOIN DR FEELGOOD?
June 1995
4. ANY SPECIAL
EXPERIENCE OR MEMORIES FROM THOSE DAYS WHICH YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH
US?
1) Being accepted so warmly by the fans + friends of Lee Brilleaux at
the 1996 Memorial gig.
2) Playing Milk & Alcohol with Gypie, Sparko and Figure at the 1996
Memorial gig.
3) Playing to 30,000 people at a Swizz Biker Festival in 1996
4) Playing and visiting Shetland, a place I love very much.
5) Supporting the Temptations in my very first month with Dr Feelgood
5. WHAT DO
YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING PART OF DR FEELGOOD?
Working and playing in Dr Feelgood is the most enjoyable thing I've
ever done. It is hard work; hard play, honesty between the musicians; a
mutual dedication to the spirit of Dr Feelgood; a very professional attitude
in the band; excellent management; respect received from so many other
musicians; the dedication of the true fans is so great.
8. IN WHICH
OTHER BAND(S) HAVE YOU PLAYED, OR ARE YOU PLAYING NOW?
Front man with Jet Harris Band 1967. Various bands and solo work, blues,
soul, even folk, over 20 years period - also playing acoustic guitar. Front
man in the Pink Torpedoes, playing harp & vocals ('90-'93). Blues piano
and vocals solo ('93-'95). Hammond player/front man - Pete Gage Band ('93-'95).
Then - Dr Feelgood. I still do Duo gigs with Paul Hartshorn (guitar) and
me (blues piano). I am recording also with a folk outfit from England -
piano only.
9. ON WHICH
OTHER RECORDS OR TAPES HAVE YOU PLAYED? (excluding Dr Feelgood ones)
In 1967 (July), singing with the Jet Harris Band - a single was released
- "My Lady" c/w "You Don't Live Twice". This single
reached no.28 in the Radion London chart. Also I have various promo-tapes
in previous bands, but not available for sale. I released a CD "Give
It With A Feeling" with my own band, under the name Pete Gage Expression
in May 1995.
10. WHAT INSPIRED
YOU TO BECOME A MUSICIAN, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY?
My inspiration came from my father who was a drummer but he gave up
playing to have a family. I believe I carried on where he left off. I dedicate
my work to him. He died, 2 months before I joined Dr Feelgood. I chose
my main instrument, MY VOICE, because I need to express myself verbally.
I just want to be heard!
11. ARE THERE
ANY OTHER INSTRUMENT(S) YOU ARE REASONABLY ABLE AT PLAYING?
I choose Harmonica because it is so expressive and it fits so nicely
in my pocket!
I chose piano because I love the range of the instrument, especially in
expressing the softer side of the blues. Also it comes much more naturally
to me than guitar, but I do play a little acoustic blues on guitar.
12a. WHICH
KIND(S) OF MUSIC/BANDS DO YOU ENJOY LISTENING TO? (Favourite bands/musicians,
favourite albums)
My favourite albums are definately these: - (But they do not indicate
the wider range of my taste)
1) KIND OF BLUE - MILES DAVIS (CBS)
2) BLUES AND ROOTS - CHARLES MINGUS (ATLANTIC)
3) COLTRANE - JOHN COLTRANE (IMPULSE)
4) BLUES & JAZZ - RAY CHARLES (ATLANTIC)
5) SOUL BALLADS - OTIS REDDING (ATLANTIC)
6) THE KOELN CONCERT - KEITH JARRETT (ECM)
7) LEROY CARR - VOLUME 4 (DOCUMENT)
8) DR. JOHN PLAYS MAC REBENACK (DEMON)
9) THE ANTHOLOGY - CURTIS MAYFIELD & THE IMPRESSIONS (MCA)
10) THE COMPLETE MUDDY WATERS (CHESS BOX SET)
I listen
to music of all styles for many hours of each day when I'm not playing
with Dr Feelgood:

New Orleans pianists: James Booker, Professor Longhair, Dr. John
Jazz artists: Mingus, Coltrane, Miles Davis, David Murray and others

Rock'n'roll: Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, and of course
Elvis from '54-'57
12b. WHICH
ARE YOUR FAVOURITE DR FEELGOOD TRACKS AND WHY?
Down By The Jetty Blues - the lyrics are brilliant, and I like the bluesy
side of Dr Feelgood.
She Does It Right - it's so snappy and basic and for me it sums up the
great Brilleaux / Wilko partnership.
Goin' Out West - its a real powerful studio track, played with all the
violence Tom Waits intended.
13a. WHICH
KIND(S) OF MUSIC DON'T YOU LIKE?
I don't like music which is not played from the heart.
13b. WHICH
ARE YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE DR FEELGOOD TRACKS, WHY?
I have no least favourite Dr Feelgood track.
14. WHAT ARE
YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
I intend to remain a member of Dr Feelgood as long as the fans want
me. Till I die if necessary - or till I'm happy to make way for someone
who can do the job with the spirit that is necessary.
Personally, I plan to develop my piano playing, and play blues, both traditional
and eventually my own songs; I'll play till the day I die.
15. WHAT ARE
YOUR WISHES FOR THE FUTURE MUSIC WISE?
See answers to question no.14.
16. WHAT ARE
YOUR PERSONAL WISHES?
Always to be true to myself, and at one with God.
17. IF YOU
COULD SETTLE DOWN SOMEWHERE ELSE, WHICH COUNTRY OR TOWN WOULD YOU LIKE
TO LIVE AND WHY?
I quite like Belgium lately - I don't know why really - its out of the
limelight, I like the cafés & bars; it's central to many countries
in Europe. I used to want Spain. I still love it. But I think the heat
would eventually wear me down.
22. WHAT SPECIAL
QUALITY DOES DR FEELGOOD HAVE WHICH OTHER BANDS LACK?
Dr Feelgood has the ability to mix with its fans, and to be just ordinary
people. Down to earth. Dr Feelgood has POWER and maturity and long life.
It is a way of life in itself.
23. WHAT WOULD
Y O U LIKE TO BE MOST REMEMBERED FOR?
I want to be remembered for being partly responsible for the continued
growth of Dr Feelgood - and for giving to Dr Feelgood extended life after
Brilleaux's death.
24. LIST YOUR
STAGE EQUIPMENT (INSTRUMENT(S)/AMPS ETC):
Towel, harmonicas in G, C, A, D, (always with a spare set of harmonicas),
suit, shirt, tie and three other members of the band - Steve, Phil and
Kevin.
25. HAVE YOU
ANYTHING TO SAY TO YOUR FANS?
I want to say the fans that I am so very grateful that I have been accepted
by you after the terrible loss of Lee Brilleaux. I want the fans to know
that as each week goes by I can feel they are giving more and more support
to us, (and to me). In return I will give 100% of my energy every gig and
every recording I do. Thank you so much to all of you.
