LEE BRILLEAUX
MEMORIAL CONCERTS

The 10th of May 1994 was a very special day for many people in the Dr Feelgood Music Bar on Canvey Island, the birthplace of the band. It was the first of a series of Lee Brilleaux Memorials and I'm sure, Lee would have enjoyed to see how many members of the various line-ups came together to share the stage! Wilko, Sparko and The Big Figure played together the first time since ages. How great to see ex- and actual members of Dr Feelgood mixing together plus few friends, p(l)aying their tribute to Lee. WHAT A GREAT DAY! - Result of this indiscribable event was the decision to organize a Lee Brilleaux Memorial each year.

All incoming money of the memorials are donated to the Fairheavens Southend Community Extended Nursing Team (S.C.E.N.T.), who cared for Lee and allowed him to stay at home with his family till the end instead of dying in a hospital.

Many Thanks
- to the musicians who always play for free!
- to the helping hands who spend much time to organise the shows!
- to the fans and friends who attend the shows, from around-the-corner and from far away!
All of you make the memorials very special events!

FOURTH MEMORIAL - May 8, 1997
Cliffs Pavilion (Maritime Rooms), Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex/England

Special Note:
Unfortunately Gypie Mayo was gigging with The Yardbirds that day, also Wilko Johnson was not present. Sparko has rheumatism in his hands which made it impossible to play bass. Hopefully he don
't have to give up playing, it would be a pity to miss the Feelgoods rawest bassist at forthcoming memorials! Great surprise was the appearance of Gordon Russell and his beautiful girlfriend Sarah who hit the stage as the "Two Timers" - what a brilliant show they made! Wow! Even the present musicians were impressed.

Because I've passed on my ticket to someone who also wanted to see the show, I unfortunately got no scan of the ticket to add here.

BANDS WHO PLAYED (in order of appearance):

THE RECEEDERS (Local band)
LARRY WALLIS
EDDIE & THE HOT RODS

FIFTH MEMORIAL - June 11, 1998
Oysterfleet Hotel, Knightswick Road, Canvey Island, Essex/England

Extras: Review 1 - Review 2 (External Link!) - Photos

Special Note:
This memorial took place on Canvey Island, the birthplace of Dr Feelgood, in the Oysterfleet Hotel which is placed on the ground where once the Dr Feelgood Music Bar was located. First band on stage were Dr Feelgood, who during the night were joined or replaced by various other musicians (listed below). Also Pete Gage played us some bluesey tunes on the piano. Similar to last years memorial the Two Timers rocked the house (better said, the hotel). It was a great night, like usual, but like last year I truly missed Gypie and Wilko. Anyway, it was a pleasure to see Sparko bringing up his bass to play for two(?) songs, even if it surely was painful for him with his ill hands!
Me personally spent lots of the time chatting to fans and friends ("Hey Dean, wanna have a drink?!"). Have to admit, after the show I definately had consumed far too many Guiness' to drive my car, nevertheless Dean (long time roadmanager of the Feelgoods) and me cruised around half the night all over Canvey, in search for some food. We ended up in a bar at the Kings Camp with a small bag of crisps and some more beers... Don't ask how I've got it managed to drive us home safe afterwards, we were simply too drunk toi walk... Luckily the cops didn't fetch us!

Ticket of 5th MemorialMUSICIANS WHO PLAYED (from A-Z):

DAVE BRONZE - Bass (Ex-Dr Feelgood)
PETE GAGE - Vocals, Harmonica, Piano (Dr Feelgood)
IAN GIBBONS - Keyboards (The Kinks, Dr Feelgood, etc...)
SARAH JAMES - Vocals, Snare, Spoons, Harmonica (Two Timers)
JOHN "BIG FIGURE" MARTIN - Drums (Bros. Grimm, Ex-Dr Feelgood, Ex-The Practice, Ex-Lone Sharks)
BARRIE MASTERS - Vocals (Eddie and the Hot Rods)
GARY MILLER - Vocals (Brothers Grimm)
PHIL MITCHELL - Bassguitar (Dr Feelgood)
KEVIN MORRIS - Drums (Dr Feelgood)
GORDON RUSSELL - Guitar (Two Timers, Ex-Dr Feelgood)
STEVE WALWYN - Guitar (Dr Feelgood)
STEVE WEST - Harmonica, Piano (Brothers Grimm)
DAVID WHITE - Vocals (1 song) (D.C. & The Cruisers / GER)

Worth to mention:
Surely the longest trip to Canvey this year had Shane Jones, a fan from Australia!

Special Note:
On the morning of the memorial some of the took the “Canvey Walk”, a stroll around Canvey Island. Unlike last years “private walk”, this year Chris Fenwick had issued an open invitation to Dr Feelgood fans to join him. The walk started at the Lobster Smack pub, went along the sea wall passing the Labworth building, the "Golden Mile" with its amusement arcades and clubs, up to Point Break which offers a nice view to Leigh-on-Sea and Southend. This was the time when me and 2 friends split from the group to give our tortured feet some rest before visiting Ann Adley at the Feelgood office. The others, like reported, went on to the place where Lee Brilleaux's ashes was set into the sea, then had a few beers in a local pub to end the tour at the office. The weather was excellent that day, the sun was burning, but I only had about 3 hours sleep (and definately too many drinks) the night before, I really couldn't make the whole tour. Instead I went back to bed for an hour before getting started for the Memorial show. - Anyway, if you want to see some photos of the tour, click here.

''Thank You's - Corner''
Gabi personally wants to thank everyone who made possible the memorial to be a great event (organisation, musicians, audience, Oysterfleet staff). My very special thanks go to
Kevin, Steve, Phil, Robert and Chris - for ''bringing me over'' to Canvey, for providing a nice room at the Oysterfleet, for taking me with you to the other 3 Feelgood gigs, for hugs & kisses. Simply: for being my real family.
Kim - for accomodation, food, fun, faith and more. The ''Kennedy girls'' for sharing their home with me. Good luck to you all!
Warren - for the really good chat at the Oysterfleet.
Lew - for playing at the Lee Memorial. Take care, Lew, and continue on the right way.
Gypie - for keeping his promise and obviously fully enjoying to return.
Pete ''Baldrick'' - for always being Baldrick ;o)
Christine - for a lot more Little Steven (treasures from her attic)

Tickets were available to order from Jan. 26, 2006 and have been priced £ 15 each. The show was sold out, like always.

Plans for the show were (as provided by manager Chris Fenwick on May 3rd): Dr Feelgood will be joined by Wilko, Sparko, The Big Figure, the Two Timers, Slim (with his accordion) and be supported by dutch R'n'B outfit Doctors Orders. - As known from past events the appearance of additional (surprise! surprise!) guests is possible any time.

Note by Gabi: Gypie Mayo was sad for not being able to make it to the show because of other commitments. Me too could not be there, but my thoughts were with you that night! Thanks to Suse for calling me (SORRY I FORGOT it was your birthday!!). Many fans fetched the gig at the Mean Fiddler in London the following day to see the Feelgood, Hot Rods and Wilko (I am getting close to really share some tears now because of having missed it...). Anyway, I know you all had a good time at both events, lots of great music and many nice people. So if you can/want/like, let me know what happened and how it went, ok?

The Canvey Walk started on Friday morning, 10am, at the Oysterfleet.

Details on the show (as much as I received on info until May 16th, so probably incomplete and not in correct order):

- Doctors Orders opened the show.
- The Two Timers hit the stage, Gordon Russell later joined the Feelgoods for a jam.
- Tim Aves (from Automatic Slim / The Rockin' Armadillos) got up on stage with Big Figure, Sparko and Gordon Russell.
- Eddie & The Hot Rods celebrated Barrie Masters 50th birthday.
- Wilko Johnson teamed up with Sparko and The Big Figure, being supported by Slim on accordion.
- Slim also joined Dr Feelgood on stage, also special guest was Pete Gage.

OTHER LEE BRILLEAUX MEMORIALS & TRIBUTES: (External links!)

June 30th, 1999 I received following e-mail:
Hi Gabi, here is a french tribute to our beloved Lee by french rock bands. Some of the bands (Backsliders, Little Bob, Sharpers, Screech Owls) are old friends of ours from our home town Le Havre France, where the Feelgoods used to play at least once a year. We all have great memories of that time, and so have many many fans all over France. We can say that Dr Feelgood have played a great part in the rock culture in Le Havre, and their spirit and music are still alive over there. If you want to listen to some of the "Tribute to Lee Brilleaux" songs, download real audio on:
