DOWN AT THE BBC - IN CONCERT 1977-1978 (UK CD Oct. 2002 - GRAND CD26) - [Coverart] [Booklet Info] [Reviews]
This latest release by Grand Records captures the legendary Dr Feelgood at the peak of their powers. These recordings were made by the BBC and originally broadcast on Radio One. Until now they've remained in the BBC archives. Both concert recordings featured on this album have been digitally re-mastered making this an essential purchase for Dr Feelgood fans as well as fans og guitar-driven rhythm 'n' blues.
Having survived the punk explosion and the acrimonious split with guitarist Wilko Johnson Dr Feelgood set about consolidating their position as the UK's most exciting live band. Wilko's replacement was the then unknown Gypie Mayo. He wasn't unknown for long. His impact on the band was enormous as the 22 tracks on this CD show. Gypie's arrival heralded the beginning of a new more commercial successful era for the band for the band as highlighted by the singles "Milk & Alcohol" and "Down at the Doctors" (live versions of both these Feelgood anthems are included on this CD).
Gypie's guitar heroics proved the perfect foil for the howling and growling of frontman Lee Brilleaux. Mix some blues standards and soul classics with band originals and you have a potion that only Dr Feelgood could come up with.

Looking Back / Stupidity / You'll Be Mine / You Upset Me Baby / Homework / Baby Jane / The Blues had a baby and they named it Rock & Roll / That's it I quit / Lucky seven / She's a Wind up / Lights Out / Looking Back / Sugar Shaker / I thought I had it made / Ninety Nine and a half / Milk & Alcohol / Night Time / Shotgun Blues / You upset me baby / Down at the Doctors / She's a Wind up / Lights out

A preview by Stephen Foster, May 2006:
(Excerpt from his column for the local newspaper)
Earlier this year I was made an offer I couldn't refuse. It came from Chris Fenwick, manager of the legendary rhythm and blues band Dr Feelgood. He asked me if I'd like to produce the group's new album. I deliberated for all of half a second and said yes. It really would have been rude not to. The project, Repeat Prescription, sees the current line-up recording new versions of old Feelgood favourites. Recording took place last month at Feelgood HQ on Canvey Island and for much of this week I've been mixing the album with the band's bassist Phil Mitchell and engineer Pat Grueber at Pat's Gemini Studios in Ipswich. To say this is a labour of love would be the understatement of the year. I've been a Dr. Feelgood fan for well over 30 years and since the great Lee Brilleaux's passing in 1994 I've compiled seven Dr Feelgood collections including the 5 CD boxed set Looking Back. The new CD is the band's first studio set since Chess Masters in 2000 and I hope you'll be impressed with a total re-working of the Feelgood anthem Milk And Alcohol and a stonking new version of Down At The Doctors. There are plenty of other treats including a Chuck Berry song which I reckon has all the right ingredients to be a Christmas hit. I know I'm somewhat biased but Repeat Prescription will capture Messrs Kane, Mitchell, Morris and Walwyn in fine fettle. The CD is scheduled for release late summer/early autumn.

FINELY TUNED (UK CD Oct. 2002 - GRAND CD25) - [Coverart]
The legendary Dr Feelgood are celebrating their 30th anniversary by saluting the five guitarists who've played a huge part in the band's history. "Finely Tuned" showcases Wilko Johnson, Gypie Mayo, Johnny Guitar, Gordon Russell and current guitar hero Steve Walwyn. This compilation features five tracks appearing on CD for the first time including a number from the "Fast Women Slow Horses" session previously unreleased in any shape or form.
Each guitarist is represented by five songs from their time with the Feelgoods with many of the tracks being chosen by the guitarists themselves. Band anthems like "Milk & Alcohol", "Down at the Doctors" and "Roxette" together with other current stage favourites such as "Mad Man Blues" and "Down by the Jetty Blues" help make this a wonderful overview of a British musical institution.
The comprehensive sleeve notes include a history of each track and quotes from all five featured guitarists as well as other band members past and present. This is indeed an album Finely Tuned.

Wilko: She does it right / The More I give / You Shouldn't Call The Doctor / Roxette / Going Back Home
Gypie: I Don't Wanna Know / Down at the Doctors / Milk and Alcohol / Going Someplace Else / Best in the World
Johnny Guitar: Sweet Sweet Lovin' / Beautiful Delilah / Murder in the First Degree / Something Out of Nothing / Alimony (first time released!)
Gordon: You Don't Love Me / Mad Man Blues / Something Good / Hunting Shooting Fishing / Don't Underestimate your Enemy
Steve: Down by the Jetty Blues / Double Crossed / Solitary Blues / The Walk / You Gotta Help Me

WOLFMAN CALLING - THE BLUES OF LEE BRILLEAUX (UK CD May 2003 - GRAND CD28) - [Coverart]
Album researched and compiled by Stephen Foster. All tracks digitally remastered by Stephen Foster and Pat Grueber at Gemini Studios, Ipswich, with additional help from Peter Reynolds.
For more than 20 years Lee Brilleaux fronted the legendary Dr. Feelgood. Lee's death in 1994 robbed the music scene of one of its most charismatic performers but his legacy lives on. To coincide with the 10th Lee Brilleaux memorial gig held on his beloved Canvey Island the label Lee co-founded, Grand Records, is releasing a collection of the best of his blues recordings.
The blues played a huge part in Lee's life. When he was a teenager Lee was lucky enough to catch blues great Howlin' Wolf performing at a pub in Romford and from that day on was determined to front his own group. Lee's on stage antics owed much to The Wolf and one of Lee's last studio recordings was a tribute to the Chicago blues great. The song is called "Wolfman Calling" and has inspired this compilation.
Over the years Dr. Feelgood covered many blues classics by the likes of B.B. King, Freddie King, Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, John Lee Hooker and, of course, Lee's main man Howlin' Wolf. Many of those recordings are featured on "Wolfman Calling". The CD also includes two Dr. Feelgood rarities - Johnny Guitar Watson's "Just One Kiss Before I Go Home" and the Sonny Boy Williamson standard "Don't Start Me Talking". Both are appearing on CD for the first time. "Just One Kiss Before I Go Home" is previously unreleased while "Don't Start Me Talking" only ever appeared on the initial vinyl run of the"Mad Man Blues" mini album. As an added bonus there's also a radio feature on Howlin' Wolf which Lee presented on Stephen Foster's blues show on BBC Radio Suffolk. This is the first ever collection of Lee Brilleaux's blues recordings and is a must for blues fans and Dr. Feelgood followers alike.
